“Willful fantasy”, “The endmost of the universe”, “Órythmósi“ – these are titles of compositions invented by kids and youth aged 9-21. Thirty young composers are laureates of the “National Composers Competition 2009“, organised by JM Germany.
Although no cash prizes are awarded, the winners have a chance to work on and showcase their talents; they are invited to the Composer’s workshop at Weikersheim Castle. From April 10th-18th they discuss their creative work with professional teachers, young professional musicians record the compositions on CD, and finally the audience, in an exciting concert, enjoys a number of world premieres.
The jury obviously has a good nose for talent; in 23 years of its existence the competition has helped discover and nurture many talented composers in the field of contemporary classical music. Several participants of the workshop have established themselves as composers in the German and international music scene, e.g. Benjamin Schweitzer, Enno Poppe and Charlotte Seither. Schweitzer remembers “One week in Weikersheim gave me inspiration for the rest of the year”.
