
As spring makes its way to Montreal, the excitement of the upcoming edition of the Montreal International Musical Competition can be felt throughout the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada House... and beyond its walls! Indeed, the whole of Montreal's cultural community is anxiously awaiting the event... and based on previous editions, the 2009 competition will once again give us the opportunity to witness the blossoming of wonderful new talents.
JMI friends and music lovers the world over, you too can follow the competition and support the participants, thanks to Radio-Canada, through live broadcasts, reports, and blogs... in other words, nothing has been spared in making this competition a truly global event!

In the meantime, with only about a month to go until the MIMC, even more details have been finalized...
32 candidates from 9 countries have been invited to participate in the Quarter Final round.
Details:
16 women (14 sopranos and 2 mezzos)
16 men (4 tenors, 6 baritones, 4 basses, and 2 countertenors)
Leading the pack with the highest number of participants are Canada (13, including 3 from Quebec), South Korea (8), the United States (4), and Russia (2). They are followed by Germany, Australia, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom, with each 1 candidate.
The official list of candidates will be revealed on May 12, at the Competition's inaugural press conference.

The International Jury - changes
Two changes have been made to the international jury. As American soprano Shirley Verrett, and Head of Artistic Programming for Moscow's Boshoi Theatre Vadim Zhuravlev cannot be present, MIMC administrators are pleased to welcome Welsh soprano Gwyneth Jones and American baritone Sherrill Milnes.
Presided by André Bourbeau, co-founder and President of the MIMC, the rest of the jury comprises of American soprano and Chair of the Voice Department at New York's Juilliard School, Edith Bers; Canadian Philip Boswell, Artistic Administrator of the Canadian Opera Company; Finnish baritone Tom Krause; Spanish artist representative Miguel Lerin (grandson of famous tenor Francisco Viñas); and Canadian bass Joseph Rouleau.
